デンマークの食器「Dining with Design」秋田県大潟村での展示 / Danish tableware “Dining with Design” displayed in Ogata Village

Last year, the Royal Danish Embassy received 23 beautiful pieces of new tableware design curated by Margrethe Odgaard under the headline “Dining with Design”. Inspired by Japanese design and created by 17 contemporary Danish craft makers and designers, most of the pieces were made specifically for this collection.

The project was initiated by the Danish Arts Foundation as part of the programme Art in Embassy, which brings works by contemporary artists and makers into selected embassies to showcase the best of Danish art and design. The objects varies from cutlery and plates to bowls and tablecloths.

In the spring of 2021, the collection has been displayed in Ogata Village in Akita prefecture – an Olympic host town for the Danish rowing athletes competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Danish. Additionally the city has a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) on promotion of comprehensive exchange with the Royal Danish Embassy in Tokyo.

During the exhibition, resident sculptor Toshio Kamada directed a sketching class for locals who drew the Danish tableware. The sketches were later displayed in The Polder Museum of Ogata Village along with the design objects themselves and pictures from the sketching class. All of which you can see below.

The aim for the exhibition was to expose locals and tourists to Danish design and culture. Just like in Japan, the design of tableware plays an important cultural role in Denmark. They are not merely functional objects for a meal but have in them a sensory, aesthetic expression. Curator of the collection, Margrethe Odgaard, puts it this way: “A table set with objects of quality, craftsmanship and care for details will be felt as a loving gesture by the guests.”

By studying and sketching the skilfully created pieces, the people of Ogata Village experienced this first hand as part of the cultural exchange.
