世 界 の ト ッ プ ブ ラ ン ド よ り 数 々 の プ ロ ダ クト を 発 表 し 、 人 気 を 博 す る デ ン マ ー ク の デ ザ イ ナ ー 、 セ シ リ エ ・ マ ン ツ 。 彼 女 の 日 本 初 と なる個展「TRANSPOSE 発想のめぐり」が、5月20日(土)~6月30日(金)の期間、高田馬場にあるアートスペース「BaBaBa」 と東日本橋の「maruni tokyo」と2会場をオルタナティブに繋いで開催いたします。

 

デザインの背後に重なる、多様な思想と経験。

柔らかで穏やかな表情を湛えながらも、細かなディテール仕 上 が り か ら 繊 細 な 色 表 現 に 至 る ま で 、 ま っ たくの 妥 協 を 許 さ ない完璧な存在を目指すセシリエ・マンツ。「すべての要素 に正統の理由があってこそ、意味を成す」と語る彼女の鋭敏 な感覚、厳格な態度はどのように養われているのでしょうか。

本展「TRANSPOSE(*01)発想のめぐり」では、セシリエ・ マンツの体験、思想、感覚、生活、創作の様子をリアルに 感じられるようにと、彼女の分身とも呼べる、ごく身近なもの たち─ 幼少期の思い出の品、仕事の道具、愛用品、素材、 試作パーツなど─ を5のテーマ別に展示します。
自身のアトリエや家から持ち寄ったものを前に、セシリエ・マンツと同じ視点でそれぞれのアイテムと対峙することで、味わう感覚と体験。一枚のロングテーブルにKvadratのテキスタイル Floyd(フロイド)を施し、展示台にした独創的な会場デザインも、 デザ イナー本人によるものです 。

セシリエ・マンツの創作の裏には、どのような考えが巡ってい るのでしょう。日本初となるセシリエ・マンツの個展にぜひご注目ください。

01:ARITA|有田の記憶

3 歳のときに、陶芸家の両親に連れられてはじめて訪れた佐賀 県有田町。2021 年に磁器シリーズ「1616 / CMA」を発表す るまで、の有田と彼女の関係性をめぐる。

 

02:TEGNESTUEN|創作の現場

日々デザインと向き合うセシリエ・マンツが、コペンハーゲン の 市 街 地 に 構 えるアトリエの一 部 を 会 場 に 移 転 。 デ ザ イン の 組 み 立 て 方 が 伺 え るドローイングペーパーや試作の道具 、デッサンなどを展示する。

 

03:MÅLTID|食事の風景

何 気 なく行う日 常 的 な 行 為 で 養 わ れ る 感 覚 と は 。 セ シ リ エ の コ レ ク シ ョ ン よ り セ レ クトし た テーブルウェアやカト ラ リ ー で 食 事 のシーンを再現。茶碗や湯呑みなど、日本の道具を取り入れ た様子も楽しめる。

 

04:AD HOC|新しいアイデア

本 展 を 設 計 し な が ら 、 次 々に 新 し い 創 作 の ア イ デ ア が 生 ま れ た というセシリエ。世界初披露となるプロトタイプを通じて、現在 進行形でめぐり続ける彼女の発想の様子を知る。

05:A Hint of Colour|色彩の意識

2023 年 4 月に、新たなカラーバリエーションを発表するマル ニ木工の家具シリーズ「EN(エン)」。絶妙な色合いのカラー ス キ ー ム が ど のようなプ ロ セ ス を 経 て 生 ま れ た の か 。 ヒントの もととなったアイテムから、創作の過程を振り返る。

Cecilie Manz|セシリエ・マンツ

1972 年デンマーク生まれ。コペンハーゲン在住。ヘルシンキ芸術デザイン大 学交換留学を経て、1997 年デンマーク王立芸術アカデミー卒業。1998 年コ ペンハーゲンに自身のスタジオを設立。家具や食器から照明、電化製品など 幅 広 い 領 域 の デ ザ イン を 手 掛 け る 。 ま た そ れ ら の 工 業 製 品 に 加 え 、 実 験 的 な プ ロト タ イプ や よ り 彫 刻 的 な 一 点 物 の デ ザ イ ン も 彼 女 の 製 作 活 動 の 中 で 重 要 な 位 置を占める。

「私はすべての作品を進行中の大きな 1 つの物語の断片として捉えています。時 代 や 機 能 を 超 え 、 一 つ 一 つ の プ ロ ジ ェ クト は ア イ デ ア や 素 材 、 美 学 に よ っ て 繋 がり合い影響しあっているのです。 オブジェクトが実験や彫刻的なアイデアに 留 ま る こ と も あ れ ば 、 も っ と 具 体 的 な も の とし て 生 ま れ 、 機 能 的 な も の へ と 発 展 し て い くこ と も あ り ま す 。 私 の 仕 事 は 常 に シ ン プ ル さ を 軸 と し て お り 、 そ れ が 純 粋で美しく、機能的なものへと向かうプロセスなのです」

Cecilie Manz is a representative Danish designer. This Exhibition asks what accounts for the finely-honed sensations of her work. Her first solo show in Japan opens soon and will explore the background to this creative practice.

 

Manz collaborates with top Scandinavian brands, such as Bang & Olufsen, Fritz Hansen and Fredericia Furniture. While in Japan she released a new ceramic project “CMA Clay” for “1616 Arita Japan”. With Maruni, a woodworking company from Hiroshima, she did En furniture collection. Manz’s remarkable portfolio also includes furniture for Hermès, released this April 2023.

 

Manz’s designs are referred to as noble and calm. Their simplicity and high functionality make them appropriate to any setting. Close attention to her work process reveals core concepts, as well as individual stories, and throughout a delicate consideration for detail and form.

 

As Manz seeks the deeper meaning of an idea, she repeats experiments, trying out various possibilities. Her attitude sometimes seems as if she were looking at things with a character and perspective outside herself.

 

This first solo show in Japan is titled TRANSPOSE: Turning Ideas Around. To ‘transpose’ means to move or replace. In music it refers to a change of key. We ask how Manz views and captures phenomena, transforming things with her contemporary designs. Exhibits demonstrate the unique environment in which her acts of transposition occur.

 

The Exhibition features a total of 200 objects including many of Manz’s representative pieces. Also included are objects such as tools found in her atelier, things she loves to use, and ongoing projects. Visitors will be exposed to scenes from her daily life, and to her memories of Arita, where her ceramicist parents took her as a child. The venue has a long table covered with Kvadrat textile “Floyd”, its fringe beautifully standing out. On this five stories are told. The Exhibition will offer a wonderful sense of proximity with this top designer.

Cecilie Manz

Designer, born 1972 in Denmark. Lives and works in Copenhagen. After graduation from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – The School of Design in 1997 including studies at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Cecilie Manz founded her own studio in Copenhagen in 1998. Here, Cecilie Manz designs furniture, tableware, lighting and electronics. In addition to her work with industrial manufactured products, her experimental prototypes and more sculptural one-offs make up an important part of her work and approach.
